Driver caught shaving while at the wheel
A MOTORIST was spotted having a shave while driving, during a police operation on major roads in Hampshire and the Thames Valley.
The lorry driver was seen with a razor in one hand and a water bottle in the other.
Officers used the height of an unmarked Scania lorry cab to spot driving offences during the one-week operation, which took place on roads including the M3 and M27 in Hampshire.
The prosecuted 198 motorists for 227 offences, the majority of which were driving whilst distracted.
They included a lorry driver brushing his teeth, a woman doing her make-up in the rear view mirror on a motorway and two van drivers reading newspapers.
One person was seen reading a map on the steering wheel, while another driver was seen using a laptop.
Sergeant Paul Dimond, who co-ordinated the operation, said: “Distracted driving is proven to be a significant factor in many of the collisions on our roads.
“Although the focus of the operation was on distraction offences, we acted on any offences seen by the lorry as well as any seen by the marked patrol cars in support.
“Many of the people stopped agreed with the police action and were very embarrassed having been caught on their phones.”
He added that most drivers who were caught using their phones were holding them low down, which he said can be very dangerous.
All drivers were issued with a £100 fine and three points on their driving licence.
Other offences included not wearing a seat belt, careless driving, speeding and failing to stop at a red light.
