Kempshott couple celebrate diamond anniversary
LONG marriages clearly run in the family for Bob Smith.
Today, Bob and his wife Joan are the toast of their family as they celebrate their Diamond Wedding.
And in reaching the super 60, Bob has joined his brothers Les and Fred, who have also passed the same marvellous marriage milestone – Les has been married for 68 years to wife Mollie, 90, and Fred for 66 years to Eileen, 87.
Bob, of Pack Lane, Kempshott, Basingstoke, said: “I don’t think there can be many brothers in the area who have all been married for the length of time that we all have – we must be mad!”
Bob, 83, and Joan, 80, tied the knot in 1953 at St Peter’s Church, in Tadley, after meeting in 1950. They got to know each other through Bob’s mother, who shopped in the grocery store where Joan then worked.
Bob said: “I saw her and thought ‘she looks a bit tasty’, and one Saturday I waited outside the shop for her to finish. We got chatting and that was that really.”
The couple, who have one son, Robert, 59, said there wasn’t any great secret to keeping a marriage going for 60 years.
Joan said: “We just carry on really, just get along with each other and help each other when we can.”
Bob, who worked as a farmer for most of his life, added: “When we do have cross words, as I think everyone does, they don’t last for long.”
The couple are celebrating their anniversary with a meal with friends and will have a party at their home for family and friends on Saturday. Among those joining them will be Les, 89, and Fred, 88.
Bob said: “It’s quite something really. It will only be a couple of years before we’re all celebrating a platinum wedding anniversary with Les and his wife.”
