Basingstoke Ladies Probus Club celebrates 20th anniversary
THE women of Basingstoke Ladies Probus Club celebrated its 20th anniversary with an afternoon tea party in the president’s garden.
Two of the original members of the group were among 38 of the current club members who congregated in Dummer to celebrate the milestone.
Founder Eva Wells said that the club has gone from strength to strength since she launched the group from her sitting room.
She said: “It really grew and now we have a waiting list.
“It started with just me and my friends, and then they invited their friends and it really grew from there.
“It’s a good way to make new friends – I think we’ve all met new people here – and we hear some really interesting lectures.
“It’s a good way to keep the mind active.”
The group meets regularly at Basing-stoke College of Technology, in Worting Road, for a monthly lunch and its members are entertained by a wide variety of different speakers.
But for their anniversary get-together they gathered in the garden of current president Julia Taylor for some Pimm’s, tea, sandwiches and a celebratory cake.
Mrs Taylor said: “I think it’s quite impressive that the group is still going and still attracting new members.
“We have a new member who has just joined us today in fact.
“The group was set up for professional ladies who want to keep active after retirement.
“We have a great group now and there are 45 current members.”
