Marathon challenge for Basingstoke PE teacher Rachel Mann
FIVE marathons in five days – that’s the tough challenge a Basingstoke PE teacher has set herself.
Rachel Mann, who teaches at several schools in Basingstoke, decided to take on the unbelievable feat in the name of charity “after a few drinks” and the 36-year-old has stuck to her word.
Rachel will run the first of the marathons in Aldershot on August 19, before running another in Fleet the following day and taking on the third in Basingstoke on August 21.
The fourth will start from Portsmouth and the fifth, on August 23, will see her complete the epic challenge in Southampton.
Rachel, who also works as a personal trainer, has never run a marathon before.
She said: “I am always active, I play a lot of netball, I teach PE and I love sport.
“But I have never run a marathon before or been particularly interested in long-distance running; I’ve always been a sprinter.
“I’ve been training as much as I’ve been able to. I’ll be disappointed if I don’t run throughout all of the marathons but I know that might not be possible.”
Rachel, who lives in Farnborough, will set off on her Basingstoke marathon from Fitness First in Chineham Business Park.
She is aiming to raise £2,000 for Cancer Research UK and has so far raised just over £1,000.
She said: “So many people in my family and people I know have been affected by cancer.
“For me it was really a no-brainer to decide to raise money for this charity – research is the only way they will ever find a cure.”
