VISITORS will this weekend be able to see archaeologists and students at work on the ruins of the ancient Roman town of Calleva Atrebatum.
The annual six-week dig, which is organised by the archaeology department at the University of Reading, is now in its 17th year.
On Saturday the students are hosting the first of two open days at the Silchester site.
The free event, between 11am and 3pm, will feature expert tours of the site, talks, demonstrations and a range of children’s activities including a mini excavation, dressing up, finds handling and more.
Admission and activities are free and refreshments will be on sale.
