BASINGSTOKE’S Top of The Town area has been the subject of much debate – and now a specialist has been recruited to breathe new life into the area.

Chas Bradfield, 51, has been appointed Basingstoke Town Centre Project Manager by Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council.

The father-of-two has been tasked with generating new investment into the Top of The Town and with helping to determine how cash already earmarked for its regeneration should be best spent.

This includes £180,000, approved by the council in February’s budget meeting, and £100,000 from the Government’s High Street Innovation Fund which resulted from the Mary Portas review into the UK’s declining high streets.

Mr Bradfield has started meeting with representatives of companies and shops in the Top of The Town to get their views on what the area needs.

He will also oversee projects to improve the look of the Top of The Town, such as the project to refurbish seating in Market Square, and Hampshire County Council’s proposal for new paving in the area.

Councillor Ranil Jayawardena, deputy leader of Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council, who has been spearheading the Top of The Town regeneration project, said: “I’m pleased to welcome Chas to the team and know that his focus on improving the vitality of the town will be welcomed.”

“Basingstoke is a successful and strong town, but we cannot take this success for granted.”

Chas Bradfield might be, 'A highly qualified and experienced public sector board level executive within the local government, environment and healthcare sectors.' as he claims on his LinkedIn profile, but what other town centres has he been responsible for regenerating? What specific experience does he have of this type of project?
Also, back in about 2009/10, he was being paid about £109k pa as Director of Customer Services at Surrey Heath Borough Council. What are BDBC paying him to carry out a project with a total budget of only £280k?
Shouldn't BDBC be using existing people and resources before employing extra personnel?

Something stop you applying for the job then?

jonone, the only things which stopped me applying were: 1, I am not an existing BDBC employee or resource; 2, I am not looking for a job; 3, I didn't see the advert; 4, I am not qualified; 5, I have no relevant experience. Apart from these minor impediments I would have been the perfect candidate.

Quite a shame that NONE of our councillors were at the meeting last night. Nore were they at the previous Top of the town meetings.
Councillor Ranil Jayawardena was very aware of the meeting.
Where also were the local Ward councillors??
I do hope this meeting with Chas Bradfield was not the councils usual "lip service to consultation".
