DOING something funny for money is the catchphrase for Comic Relief – and there were tears of laughter in Basingstoke when a brave group of volunteers attempted stand-up comedy to help the good cause.

The 16 participants who took part in the BBC’s Stand up if you Dare event for Comic Relief were plucky amateurs, and they took up the challenge with the joint aim of raising funds for this year’s Red Nose Day appeal.

The volunteers spent several weeks perfecting their two-and-a-half minute act, and were given tips from two professional comedians at a workshop, including from Jan Jack, who runs the Laughter-House at the Red Lion Hotel.

But on Monday night, it was down to the comics to deliver a polished performance and make their audience at the Red Lion Hotel laugh.

Compere Dave Ward warmed up the crowd and introduced each of the acts before their moment in the spotlight.
