Park View pupils take part in a world record attempt for the most people singing and signing at the same time
A CHORUS of children’s voices echoed around a school hall when they sang and signed in unison as part of a world record attempt.
The youngsters from Park View Infant School joined thousands of others across Great Britain as part of charity SignHealth’s mission to break the world record for the most people singing and signing at the same time.
The charity is still waiting to find out if it broke last year’s record of 114,277 people.
Pupils at Park View, in Pinkerton Road, Basingstoke, began the record attempt at 2.45pm, singing and signing for 30 minutes non-stop, and raised £164 for the charity by donating to take part.
The money will be used to transform the lives of extremely vulnerable deaf children and adults.
Sign2Sing coincided with Park View’s Deaf Awareness Week, in which various activities were held.
The school has resourced provision for children with hearing impairment.
Ghislaine Fletcher, teacher of the deaf at Park View, said: “We are a total communication unit, using any means that is appropriate for individual deaf children to communicate, from British Sign Language and Sign Supported English to Spoken English, and all the children in the school enjoy learning to use some sign language.”
Teachers taught pupils the various songs in the lead-up to the event, and children came in on the day wearing a scarf like Olli the monkey – a children’s book character who loves to sign and helped the children learn the songs through online digital resource and interactive lessons.
Children at Kempshott Infant School, in Old Down Close, also took part in the world record attempt.
