A BASINGSTOKE couple had a shock this morning when they rounded a corner on the A339 and were confronted with an overturned lorry.

Shani Rogers and her husband Bob, of Western Way, South Ham, were on the road in the Bentworth area at around 10am this morning when they saw the overturned lorry, which was still smoking.

Shani, 51, said: “It must have just happened when we got there. We went around Brighton Hill roundabout twice on our way there this morning when we were deciding where we wanted to go.

“It’s so frightening to think what could have happened if we hadn’t and had been on that road as the lorry went over.

“That bend is so dangerous.”

The haulage lorry had been travelling in the direction of Basingstoke when it overturned.

The driver of the lorry, which was transporting grain, was taken to Basingstoke hospital with an injury to his arm after being freed from the cab by the fire service.

The road was closed in both directions for more than three hours for grain and diesel to be cleared.

A bend in the road is only dangerous if a driver does not approach it with care! This lorry will have tipped due to being driven too fast, or due to incorrect loading. Ice and surface water may be factors, but niether were present. Both speed of the vehicle and loading are the responsibility of the driver, therefore appropriate criminal punishment should be forthcoming.

In response to Jonone a little added information would be helpful in your diagnosis of speeding and criminal prosecution, firstly I am assuming u were not on the road at time of judgement and secondly I'm hoping ur experience in driving hgv is extensive to offer this opinion. I have first hand knowledge of this incidence as it was my dad who had this unfortunate accident, who has been a hgv driver for 40 years and No accidents or tickets for speeding. Maybe there was a fault with the lorry, something on the road or both which caused this accident and to just presume he was speeding is unnecessary without all the facts present. I think his outstanding driving history is a credit to him and one accident in his career not deemed in need of criminal punishment if it was indeed just an accident ! These things happen after all. Thankfully he is recovering well at home not that there was any sign of your concern x
