FUNDRAISING and the festive season were the perfect combination for pupils who got into the spirit of the season by holding a charity Christmas market at their Basingstoke school.

The market, held on December 18, raised £771.15 in aid of Naomi House Children’s Hospice – a charity which was chosen by the school council and which provides support to children and young adults with life-limiting conditions as well as their families.

The market, held at Kings Furlong Junior School, in Portacre Rise, Kings Furlong, was the culmination of a three-week learning project in which each class took an element of Christmas to learn about.

With topics ranging from angels to stars and traditions to gifts, the children had plenty to take inspiration from for their related goods, which they sold to parents who visited the Christmas market.

The pupils even organised a ceremony which took place before the event, which included guitar, recorder and choir performances as well as refreshments and a raffle.

Jan O'Brien, admin officer at the school, said: “Parents have really engaged in the project and have been in to lessons with their children, to make the products. It’s been a real community event.”
