Emergency response teams ready to deal with bad weather problems tonight

HIGH wind speeds and heavy rain is forecast for this evening, but Hampshire highways emergency response teams are mobilised and on stand-by to deal with any problems.

The team will respond to reports of fallen branches or trees blocking roads, as well as floods and blocked drains. The forecast is for winds in excess of 60mph, combined with torrential downpours in places, from around 7pm tonight.

Councillor Mel Kendal, deputy leader and executive member for environment and transport at Hampshire County Council, said: “If the forecast is accurate, Hampshire is in for some extreme wet and windy conditions later. Our highways teams are ready with additional support from extra tree crews, gully tankers and emergency response teams on stand-by to help keep Hampshire moving, by dealing with fallen branches or trees and flooded road. Given that this weather is set to strike towards the end of the rush hour, when our roads may still be busy, some people’s journeys may be affected.

“I would ask road users to take particular care if they have to make a journey in these conditions, diving with caution and at an appropriate speed. Sudden, very heavy downpours can lead to roads flooding quickly. Do not attempt to use fords and be extra careful driving through any road surface water as it may be difficult to judge its depth.”

He also asked driver to “spare a thought for cyclists and pedestrians walking along the roadside, so that they are not showered by puddle water.”
