Tips offered on how to deter burglars
IT IS better to be safe than sorry – that was the message being plugged at a community safety showcase in Basingstoke.
Teams from Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council, Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service, Neighbourhood Watch, and the police were on hand to dish out tips to residents on ways to deter burglars and stay safe in the winter.
And with the days getting shorter, members of the borough’s community safety teams were keen to stress the importance of staying visible when walking or cycling on the streets.
The event, at the Oakridge Hall for All, in Forsythia Walk, is one of a number of council-led events aimed at encouraging people to “stay safe”.
Leader of the council, Councillor Clive Sanders said: “Everyone likes to feel safe in their own home.
“Even though ours is one of the safest areas in which to live, this awareness day gives residents the opportunity to get free advice and information from local organisations.”
Some of the key messages included keeping some lights on in the house at night to deter would-be thieves and wearing high visibility clothing after dark.
