Volunteers needed to plant trees on Basingstoke's Old Common
11:10am Friday 26th October 2012 in Local By Adam Richards
HUNDREDS of young saplings are set to be planted on Basingstoke’s Old Common – and the borough council is asking residents to help out.
Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council wants green-fingered volunteers to help to create a woodland corridor linking two important wildlife spots – Crabtree Plantation and Basing Fen, at Redbridge Lane.
Volunteers would work alongside the borough’s tree wardens, and conservation volunteers. No experience and equipment is provided but sturdy footwear is essential.
Borough environment chief Councillor Robert Donnell said: “The borough’s woodlands are such a precious source of food and shelter for local wildlife and by improving this local habitat not only will it encourage more wildlife it will also help the area to become a woodland that future generations will enjoy.”
The planting takes place from 10am on November 2, and 3. For more information, call Katy Hooper on 01256 845649.
