Sir.-As you know, Hampshire Music Service is one of the best in the country, supporting 72 ensembles.
My daughter used to be principal horn player of the Hampshire County Youth Band, so we were so pleased to hear that the band had won the County Ensemble honours at the National Brass Band Championships for the second year running.
This is an outstanding achievement and extremely unusual for a band to win an award for two consecutive years running - a landmark victory.
I have fond memories of my wife and I spending many a Saturday in New Alresford, while the band rehearsed at Perins School.
The band is a community of totally dedicated players, parents and staff and their success is down to the excellent brass teaching in the county's schools and ensembles.
Jock McKenzie, who is the band conductor, should also be congratulated for his leadership.
The Hampshire County Youth Orchestra, Hampshire County Youth Jazz Orchestra and Hampshire County Youth Choir are all fine examples of high-quality ensembles of top music.
So when you see bad press concerning some of our young people, try to remember that there are a lot of them who enjoy playing music and taking part in all sorts of sports.
I am sure you will agree that the future is safe in their hands.
-Keith Chapman, County councillor for Calleva and Kingsclere.
