Fury over spend on Manydown

Sir.-I was appalled to see the county council spending more money on research into the Manydown development proposal (The Gazette, April 10).

Development of Manydown was first put forward in 1995 in the Hampshire County structure plan. The proposal fell at the first hurdle - the structure plan inquiry.

A new proposal was tabled by the borough council for the 2001-2011 Local Plan. But the borough could not justify this scale of greenfield development so the proposal faltered a second time.

The borough came back a third time with the Manydown development plan - this time to run to 2016.

This was thrown out by the Local Plan inquiry.

The development proposal has now been thrown out three times. After three strikes, surely it is out?

Manydown commits us to a huge greenfield development long into the future, far beyond the period in which we can assess the need for housing in such numbers and beyond the period in which alternative brownfield sites come forward.

This crude approach worked in past times of rapid expansion but we have moved on and no longer need another Chineham and Hatch Warren-size development.

The county is simply acting as a money-grabbing speculative developer by continuing with the promotion of Manydown.

Our taxes should not be used for this and our elected representatives should not act in this way.

-Gary Rolfe, Oakley.

They must stop wasting money on research here. Stop messing around and get building. Seems you just can't please the anti-development lobby.
You try to convert houses - no dice.

You try to build in gardens - no dice.

You try to build blocks of flats in limited spaces - no dice.

You try to build new towns - no dice.

You try to build new estates - no dice.

If you don't want any more homes stop getting divorced, stop breading and have your kids put down - thus removing the need to build. If you don't want to do that, quit moaning.
