'Superwoman' given hospital appointment

A CITY "superwoman" has been appointed to help run Basingstoke hospital.

Nicola Horlick - who hit national headlines as a superwoman in the 90s, after balancing her top London job in fund management with bringing up five children - has been appointed non-executive director on the hospital's board of governors.

Ms Horlick, from Bramdean in Hampshire, has worked for high-profile banks, including Deutsche and Societe Generale, and was chief executive of S G Asset management.

She also set up her own investment company, Bramdean Asset Management.

Ms Horlick said: "Over the years, I have had much experience of NHS services. I am a passionate supporter of the NHS and am looking forward to the opportunity to get involved in such a successful hospital."

Leon Allen, from Lower Chute, Hampshire, will also become a non-executive director.

Mr Allen has a wide range of experience, including positions as chairman and chief executive of the worldwide Tetley Group.

Mr Allen said: "My background is the commercial business, but I have always been interested in healthcare and am looking forward to working with all the staff, channelling my skills and experiences into this area to make a difference to people's lives locally."

Gordon Holdcroft, Basingstoke hospital's chairman, said: "The role of the non-executive director is crucial in providing both an independent and challenging view, but also to support us in developing the hospital. Nicola and Leon will certainly strengthen the team.

"I am looking forward to the hospital gaining from their wide experience."

Directors are responsible for leading the hospital and ensuring delivery of key strategic and managerial issues. The new non-executive directors were appointed by the hospital's council of governors and the initial appointment period is for four years.

I thought the big solution to the problems was the lack of a Matron in hospitals. We need people experienced in the NHS from the ground level I thought.
The last thing we need is an ideas person who knows nothing about running a hospital apart from what other 'executives' tell her.
No wonder it costs a fortune to run the NHS and things are still going wrong in all departments.

Yet again a magnificent catch by Mary Edwards and her girls brigade. Now that Superwoman will receive a very attractive salary, I presume there will be a further knock on effect with the cost of cleaning services and a lack of investment in nursing staff. We can look forward to a multitude of patients, especially the elderly being neglected and then die from MRSA or C.Difficile.
