BASINGSTOKE hospital has put in place "robust infection control procedures" to contain the norovirus after a small number of cases were reported.

Mary Edwards, chief executive of Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, which runs the hospital in Aldermaston Road, has reassured the public that the hospital is not dealing with an outbreak of the stomach bug virus, which causes diarrhoea and vomiting.

She said: "Norovirus is in the community at the moment and from time to time it is inevitable that patients in the hospital will be affected. We are experiencing a small number of cases, but we have not declared an outbreak and have robust infection control procedures in place to contain the virus."

Symptoms of norovirus include suddenly feeling sick, projectile vomiting and watery diarrhoea.

Some people also have a slight fever, headaches, painful stomach cramps and aching limbs.

If you experience these symptoms, the NHS advises to stay at home until you feel better as there is no cure for norovirus.

Drink plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration, take paracetamol for any fever or aches and pains and get plenty of rest.

Try to avoid going to your GP, as norovirus can spread to others very easily.

Call your GP or NHS 111 if your are concerned or need any advice.
