A BASINGSTOKE mum whose son died of cot death is preparing to trek the Great Wall of China to raise money for a charity that supported her during her darkest days.

Debbie Lawson will raise money for the Lullaby Trust through her mission, after the charity offered her support following the sudden death of her son Hadrian.

Hadrian was 21-months-old when he died in his sleep on December 20, 1998.

Debbie, from Kempshott, said: “I put him to bed, he was my third child, and my eldest child who was six at the time went to get him up as she always did every day and there was this almighty scream. I went in there and there he was. He was flat on his face, ice cold, there was no way of resuscitating him.”

Debbie’s life was thrown upside-down as she tried to deal with her grief, while still caring for her two other children.

The 50-year-old, who went on to have another child, said the Lullaby Trust provided her with support, pairing her up with a befriender who had been through the same experience.

She said: “It’s always times like his 18th birthday you think about that. It’s the milestones.

You always know that there’s one person missing. I had four children but now I have only got three.”

Debbie will walk the Great Wall of China with Action Challenge, and is holding a fundraising event at her work, in Tesco Express, Kempshott, this Friday, Saturday and Sunday to raise awareness of her challenge.

The dates coincide with the Lullaby Trust’s Back to Sleep campaign, which encourages parents to always place a baby on its back to sleep.

Debbie will walk the Great Wall in April. To donate visit justgiving.com/ debbielawson2016.
