BONKERS barnets were on show across the borough last Friday as hundreds of people took part in St Michael’s Hospice Mad Hair Day.

As part of the annual fundraising campaign, which raises thousands of pounds of much-needed funds for the hospice, in Aldermaston Road, people were encouraged to style their hair into weird and wacky dos.

Schools, colleges and businesses took part in the day, and participants used wigs, curling tongs, crimpers and dyes to try and create the craziest possible looks.

Although the funds are yet to be totted up, organisers anticipate this year’s total will top £8,500, smashing last year’s £6,000 total.

Claire Webb, community campaigns co-ordinator, said: “This year’s Mad Hair Day was our best ever with more than 50 organisations taking part. The support from the local community really has been incredible.

“Thank you to everyone who got involved and helped make Mad Hair Day 2015 one to really remember.”

Lesley McKenzie, a hairdresser at the hospice, agreed to have her own long blonde hair shaved off and dyed blue - the hospice colour – raising thousands in the process.

Staff and volunteers from the Brighton Hill hospice store sport ed their own crazy hair throughout the day.

Among the schools involved was The Federation of Winklebury Infant & Junior Schools, and pupils on both sites certainly got into the spirit of the occasion, as did the teachers.

Kingsclere Primary School was also among those taking part and pupils there made a great effort with their crazy hairstyles, with hair dyed all sorts of hues (pictured below), and one pupil had her hair in an impressive nature inspired creation featuring leaves and twigs.

Basingstoke Gazette:

Prior to the event, support was drummed up with a special bus which visited schools to inspire students to take part.

On board the bus, donated for the day by Stagecoach, students from Basingstoke College of Technology’s hairdressing department showed others how best to get a truly ‘mad’ look for their hair.
