DO YOU have an idea on how to make Basingstoke a greener place to live? Then there is somebody who wants to hear from you.

Former Mayor of Basingstoke and Deane Councillor Martin Biermann is seeking ideas on how to spend £25,000 of borough council cash.

As previously reported, the money is the amount the Chine-ham ward councillor saved by ditching the Mayor’s taxpayer- funded chauffeur service during his term as the borough’s first citizen from April 2011 to April 2012.

The green-thinking Independent councillor opted to travel to the majority of his 322 official engagements by bicycle.

Further savings were made by using his own car, or being chauffeured free-of-charge in an electric vehicle.

The savings have been set aside for “green transport initiatives” and Cllr Biermann is due to meet with the borough’s environment chief Cllr Robert Donnell to brainstorm ideas on how it should be spent.

To date, Cllr Biermann has a shortlist of four ideas – but he is now calling for people to help him out by coming up with others.

“Apart from some embryonic ideas of my own, I was hoping to canvass the wider public as to any additional ideas,” he said.

“Sadly, the sort of money we are talking about seriously limits the possibilities to achieve ground-breaking results.”

Cllr Biermann’s ideas are an electric pool car for borough council officers, more real-time bus information displays, a community car scheme, or using the money to address missing cycle links within the borough.

He added: “While there are many environmentally-friendly improvements one could make, these are targeted specifically at transport issues since this is how the savings were made and facilitated establishment of the fund.”
