A BASINGSTOKE college has scooped a national green award for its sustainability initiatives.

Basingstoke College of Technology was declared the Best Newcomer in the Green Gown Awards 2013 in recognition of its EcoBCoT strategy.

EcoBCoT aims to establish the college, in Worting Road, as a leader in the practice, promotion and training of sustainability, and to embed this into its curriculum.

Earlier this year, BCoT invested £160,000 in a 400 panel solar installation on its roof spaces, which generates 15 per cent of the college’s annual electricity requirement and a financial return in excess of 13 per cent each year.

David Moir, deputy principal for finance and resources at BCoT, said: “We are delighted to have won the Best New-comer category in the Green Gown Awards.

“EcoBCoT reflects BCoT’s commitment to providing a sustainability framework which encompasses education, information and practical involvement.

“Being part of this awards process is recognition of our determination to become a leader in this field and we are really looking forward to our next sustainability challenge.”

BCoT beat off competition from five other education establishments, including Falmouth Exeter Plus and Harrow College.

Iain Patton, chief executive of the Environmen-tal Association for Universities and Colleges (EAUC), said: “In the face of tumultuous change, sustainability is revealing its value to the education sector.

“With Green Gown Award application numbers even higher than last year, these sector leaders are finding new ways to build financially viable and resilient organisations which prepare employable graduates who are ready for the challenges ahead.”
