BOOKWORMS from a primary school have proved themselves to be record breakers to earn themselves a mountain of new reads.

Hook Infant School has been taking part in a scheme with Usborne Publishing to take on reading-related challenges to gain sponsorship which is used in turn to buy new books for the school.

Overall, the pupils managed to raise £1,700 in their sponsored Ready, Steady, Read reading challenge which Usborne added an extra 60 per cent to, meaning just under £2,700 worth of books have been donated.

Tammy Solman Sculley, an independent Usborne organiser who worked with the school, said: "This is the largest amount raised by any school in our team. My manager has been doing this for 10 years and she said it was the biggest total she was seen.

"When I saw the total come through, I just had to tell her as quickly as possible! I was shocked.

"But its amazing. To see so many new books piled up, it was great."

The books were delivered to the school on Thursday last week.

Tammy, who works as an Usborne organiser under the name Kara's Book Corner, added: "It is a great scheme as schools can get new books for their pupils and it doesn't touch the school's budget and children are also encouraged to read."
