DESIGN and engineering skills were put to the test by pupils taking part in an annual challenge.

Teams from various local schools competed in AWE’s Schools Engineering Challenge, held at the Aldermaston Recreation Centre on July 8.

The event was one of several involving AWE scientists and engineers throughout July, who are aiming to inspire youngsters to learn about science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM).

A team of AWE graduates helped the 14 and 15-year-olds design and build a gravity car – a vehicle powered by the force of gravity – constructing them using the materials and tools provided.

Matt Stuart-White, trainee AWE health physicist, who was one of the graduate team hosting the challenge, said: “Everyone enjoyed the day. The pupils learnt a great deal but also gained an understanding of how engineering can be challenging but also fun.”
