WE WILL remember them – that was the message from a group of schoolchildren who have created a lasting tribute to the fallen heroes of the First World War.
Children at Whitchurch Primary School hand stitched a poppy onto individual squares of fabric, which were then joined together by a parent to create the commemorative display.
The patchwork will now be hung up at the school, in Daniel Road, until 2018 - when it will be the 100th anniversary of the end of World War One.
Judith Keegan, a Year 3 and 4 teacher at the school, said: “It was part of a project by Year 3 and 4 children where they were doing some sewing skills.
“There was embroidery and cross stitch and we were doing a project at the time about the Christmas truce of World War One and we wanted to do something that we could put up to remember the war.
“We started with a patchwork quilt and each child learnt the skills and decided which to use to create a tile for the patchwork.”
She added: “They loved it and it looks really effective.
“When it came together it looked really good.”
