WHITCHURCH schoolchildren will showcase their artistic talents at an art competition on the subject of Pentecost.

Children from Whitchurch Church of England Primary School, in Daniel Road, are working with the All Hallows Church, in Church Street, and their artwork will go on display at the church during Pentecost from May 17 to 24.

Pentecost is a Christian festival which celebrates the descent of the Holy Spirit on the disciples of Jesus after his Ascension, held on the seventh Sunday after Easter.

Sophie Lloyd, of the All Hallows congregation, said: “Pentecost has a theme which is very appealing to children’s imaginations. It was when the disciples were visited by the Holy Spirit in wind and fire and found themselves talking in foreign languages, so there is a lot of scope for children to be inventive.

“All the pupils at the primary school are studying what Pentecost means during RE lessons and with the help of their teacher will make a piece of art using a variety of techniques, be it painting, watercolour, sculpture, papier mache or even Playdoh.”

The competition will be judged by local artists Jeanne Titchiner and Zoe Fitchet and the borough’s Mayor.

A prizegiving ceremony for the lucky winners will take place at All Hallows Church between 2pm and 4pm on Saturday, May 23.
