A NURSERY is to be awarded £25,000 to provide two new toilets at a Basingstoke community centre.

The Brighton Hill Community Association and Acorns Nursery will receive the five-figure sum to build two new toilets in the main room at the centre, used by the nursery, in Gershwin Road.

The funding is from developers’ contributions which were received following approval of the 66 homes built on the former Beech Down Primary School, in Gershwin Road.

A report to the borough’s Cabinet member for partnerships, Councillor Cathy Osselton, who has approved the application under delegated powers, says that in recent years, “it has been difficult to ensure the safeguarding of the children” but if the two toilets are built, the nursery will be self-contained.

In the report, Cllr Osselton says: “The project meets needs identified by the relevant community and will enhance local facilities for community activity.

“It is noted that the relevant ward members have been involved in discussions, and therefore I am pleased to release the funds for these projects.”
