PUPILS at a secondary school got an insight into the working world from the inspirational man at the top of a major Basingstoke-based business.

Michael Keegan, chief executive officer at Fujitsu UK and Ireland, gave a careers talk when he addressed pupils at The Vyne Community School, in South View, Basingstoke.

Mr Keegan had a tour of the school before taking part in a question-and-answer session in the school’s sports hall, in which he talked about his career, how to maintain a work-life balance, and the value of experience.

Drama teacher Kate Cunio, who helped to organise the talk, told The Gazette: “He turned out to be a really nice, normal chap. He was really easy going and was really inspirational.

“A lot of kids have come up to me afterwards saying, ‘If he can do it, so can I’.”

The school, in Vyne Road, and the technology company, which has an office in Jays Close, Viables, have worked together for more than a year as part of the Business in the Community project.

The firm helped to renovate the school’s central quod last year. Following designs by children in Year 9, they supplied permanent table tennis tables, a barbecue, and retractable covers to protect children from the rain.

The company has also helped with mock interviews for secondary school pupils looking to go on to college.
