A CHINESE dragon was an eye-catching sight as it slithered its way around a Basingstoke supermarket.

Shoppers and staff looked on as eight children from Great Binfields Primary School took the dragon around the aisles of Tesco at Chineham Shopping Centre.

Some of the pupils used a drum to provide the rhythm for the dance.

The annual event, held to celebrate Chinese New Year, started three years ago after the school’s headteacher, Simon Cushing, bought the dragon on the internet auction site eBay for a school production.

Julie Shepherd, community champion at the Tesco store, said: “It was great fun and the customers loved it.

“It was an ideal example of bringing the community into the store and creating some fun for the staff and customers.”

Tesco is keen to support local organisations. To find out more, call Julie on 07514 408 482 or email basingstoke@communityattesco.org.uk.
