PATIENTS, staff and volunteers at a Hospice are enjoying fresh food and snacks thanks to a new initiative from AWE.
AWE volunteers take surplus sandwiches, fruit and cakes to St Michael’s Hospice every week and the deliveries are proving a hit.
Jackie Ridge, corporate partnership and legacy manager at the hospice, said: “The deliveries are not only a huge talking point with all our staff and volunteers but also with our patients and visitors.
"During difficult times, the smallest of things can lift spirits and provide a much needed distraction from other things that might be going on, so this is so much more than feeding a hunger.
“Food can be a major issue for people who are poorly but even our patients who are unable partake in a lovely AWE treat, are thrilled that their visitors, who have quite often come straight from work, are able to enjoy a lovely sandwich and a cup of tea and cake.”
AWE’s corporate responsibility manager, Julie Lane, added: “This is something we have
wanted to do for a long time. There are catering facilities across the site and every week,
there is a quantity of food which remains unsold. It is freshly made and in date but was
previously discarded.
“We thought there must be a better option and we’re so pleased that everyone at St Michael’s is enjoying the deliveries. We use chiller boxes to ensure the food arrives there in perfect condition and I’d like to say thank you to our volunteers; and to our catering supplier which has worked hard to help set up this scheme.”
