SPECULATIVE plans to redevelop Basingstoke Town Football Club’s home of more than 70 years have been revealed.

Residents living near The Camrose off Western Way have received a flyer about a potential planning application for the site.

The leaflet, produced by Basron Developments Ltd, states a plan will be submitted to Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council with a proposal to build up to 90 new homes, including three-storey flats, a 90-bedroom hotel and a drive-thru fast food restaurant.

Residents greeted the plan with mixed reactions.

Dennis Bailey, of Buckland Avenue said: “Houses I can understand as there is a need for them.

“I am very much opposed to the idea of a hotel on the site as we already struggle with the volume of traffic.”

Another resident who lives in Chichester Place added: “It doesn’t really bother me to be honest, we have noise at the moment on match days and we already have a lot of traffic so as long as they do something with the site it doesn’t bother me.”

The leaflet was sent out just over a week after it was agreed that the football club would be moving to the Hampshire FA Sports complex in Winklebury once facilities there are ready.

South Ham ward councillor Colin Regan said: “We want to see affordable housing on the site, what is being proposed is not keeping with the area in anyway.”

A consultation is due to be held between 4pm and 8pm today at the team’s clubhouse.

A spokeswoman for the borough council said: “This is a consultation on a possible planning application for the Camrose site by Basron. The council is not involved in this consultation. No planning application has been made to the council as planning authority at this stage.”

Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council owns some land at the Camrose stadium, but no decision has been made to use or sell this land.”
