A FILM screening has taken place to show the cost of the clothing industry.
The Basingstoke and Deane Fairtrade group, supported by Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council, recently screened the film The True Cost at The Forge.
As part of countrywide celebrations of Fairtrade Fortnight, the group welcomed more than 40 people including deputy mayor, Councillor Sean Keating to the free showing of this film about the fashion industry and what happens in the supply chain of the clothes we wear.
The screening was a sell-out. Dr Savithri Bartlett, senior fellow at the University of Winchester, who lectures on the history of fashion, led the discussion with the audience after the film.
Cllr Keating said: “This True Cost fashion and trade justice film is an eye opener to the fashion industry.
“When asked the actual minimum wage used in the trade the individual was unable to say what it was. A gripping exposition of exploitation.”
The Fairtrade group meets quarterly and organises activities to promote awareness and understanding of Fairtrade in the borough.
