BASINGSTOKE and Deane Borough Council has apologised after extra bin bags that were due to be collected over the festive period were not carried out.

WIth additional waste expected over the Christmas weekend the borough council had been listed on its website for the first week after Christmas, additional bags would be taken.

However, some residents said they were yet to have their extra waste collected as part of the service.

Nikki Turner, of Hatch Warren, was one of the unfortunate few whose was wasn’t collected. The normal collection day would have been on Christmas Day (December 25), but due to the bank holiday, it was due to be collected on Wednesday 27.

Nikki said: “It said on their website that there would be an extra bin collection, but there wasn’t. We even packaged the wrapping paper separately. The bin men did come, but when we challenged them about why they hadn’t taken the extra bin, the man was very rude to my husband. They haven’t collected what they said they would and it was very inconvenient. In the end, we had to take the bins down to the tip ourselves.

“It’s possible that there could have been a miscommunication, and they didn’t know that they had to take it, but the man was very rude about it. It doesn’t change, this happens every year.”

The waste was collected in some areas of the borough, but not others, which led to confusion and frustration for some residents in Hatch Warren and Beggarwood.

Cabinet member for regulatory services and the environment for the borough council, Cllr Hayley Eachus, said: “We received several complaints yesterday (December 27) that side waste wasn’t collected in the Hatch Warren and Beggarwood area, we raised this with our contractor Veolia as soon as it was brought to our attention and this was rectified immediately.

“A crew will be returning today to those areas where additional sacks were not collected. It is our policy that side waste will be taken for the first collection after Christmas and we apologise for any inconvenience caused.”

During the festive period, residents are advised to visit the council's website at basingstoke.gov.uk/service-updates for updates on bin collections as adverse weather can affect collections.
