FATHER Christmas is coming to Odiham on the Basingstoke Canal to help raise money and awareness for a charity that promotes fully accessible boat access for disabled users.

Accessible Boating is a charity managed and operated by unpaid volunteers offering opportunities for disabled people or those with access difficulties to go boating on the Basingstoke Canal from Colt Hill Wharf, Odiham.

The crafts are specially designed and equipped to cater for those with disabilities or reduced mobility; they have hydraulic lifts to give easy access for those in wheelchairs and both boats have accessible toilets.

Accessible Boating has been running since 1986 after it saw the difficulty disabled people have in accessing boats and other leisure activities.

This year, for the third year running, the charity has invited Father Christmas to come aboard from his grotto during the 20-minute boat ride.

Trips run every 30 minutes from 2pm until 4.30pm on December 15, 16, 17 and 22 from Galleon Marine’s Boatyard Colt Hill.

Steve Lavender, from the Accessible Boating Association, said: “The trips are open to anyone including wheelchair users.

“This is the third year running, it is just something really different and fun.

“After we welcome Father Christmas on board, he will hand out presents to children under the age of 12.

“After the Christmas trip, passengers can enjoy a hot drink and a mince pie in Galleon Marine’s cosy wood cabin while the children do a colouring activity.

“It’s a great way to get in the Christmas mood and has been really successful in previous years.”

The price to take part is £8 per person, which includes a gift for children under 12 while all proceeds from the trips support Accessible Boating.

Due to popularity, pre-booking is essential so call the Elf Line on 07934926683 to book a space on Father Christmas’ boat trip.

Mr Lavender added: “Father Christmas is all geared up for the season”
