WHO knew a murder trial could look so fabulous?

The fun, frivolous and very pink Legally Blonde the Musical was a definite crowd pleaser when it opened at the Mayflower theatre in Southampton last night.

Based on the Reese Witherspoon film, Legally Blonde the Musical offers one-time Eurovision hopeful Lucie Jones as the lead role Elle Woods as she goes on a journey of love and passion.

With all its pink, fluffy and OMGness, you could be forgiven for thinking that Anthony Williams’ adaptation of the film is just for the female members of the audience, but the pure likability of the leading lady draws everyone in. Through all the bright colours and big smiles, there are topical themes of sexual predation and workplace bullying which come to light.

But what really makes this production something for everyone is the non-stop laughter. Rita Simmons’ portrayal of Paulette Bonafonte is perfect and the former Eastenders star shows she’s got a pair of lungs on her too.

This being said, the show belongs to Jones, with no fewer than 16 costume changes, her bubbly portrayal of Miss Woods is infectious and one that you can’t help but root for in the end. So when our heroine wins the day, triumphing in her court case on the strength of her fashion and beauty knowledge, and finding true love along the way, the theatre was on its feet celebrating with her.

It is rare that you can say a performance is completely flawless, but the fast tempo and intertwining  of characters is so seamless that if there are any cracks you don’t see them.

Legally Blonde is the ultimate feel good musical and when leaving the theatre, you’d be struggling to find a person without a smile stretching from ear-to-ear.

Legally Blonde runs until Saturday. Tickets: 023 8071 1811 or visit mayflower.org.uk.
