A VISIT to a piece of land for a proposed ‘glamping’ site has been requested by council planning chiefs before they decide on the fate of the application.

Members of Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council’s development control committee deferred a decision on plans to build at the site in Browning Hill Green, in Baughurst.

At the meeting held on Wednesday, 4 October, councillors heard from the applicant Alan Gibbs on how he proposed to build six glamping pods/living vans with amenities and use the existing barn to store equipment.

During the meeting Mr Gibbs said: “I feel it will be a positive addition to the local area and help the economy of the local area as well as allowing families and disabled people to enjoy the tourist attractions of the area.

“I want it to be for all people, but I also want it to be a high-profile adventure. I love the area and I do not want to spoil it.”

However, members of the Baughurst Society and residents raised objections to the plans, stating it would have an adverse impact on how the area looks.

Committee member Councillor Michael Westbrook also questioned if there was a need for the type of facility in the area.

Speaking on behalf of the residents who objected to the plans, Baughurst and Tadley North ward councillor, Cllr Robert Tate said: “Does it offer anything? No, it doesn’t offer to the community in terms of employment, it doesn’t offer anything in terms of economic growth, it doesn’t offer anything in terms of tourism because there is no perceived need it is a cherished rural area.

“The landscape is valued by the community, and I feel there would be huge benefit from a visit to that site. “ Chair of the committee, councillor Paul Miller added: “I get the feeling we would benefit from a properly structured viewing of the site.”

The decision on the site has been deferred until councillors visit the site to evaluate whether the proposed plans would have a significant impact on the environment and community.

The decision will then be taken whether to approved or refuse the application at the next development control committee meeting, scheduled for November 1.
