A UNIQUE sort of act will soon be performing in Basingstoke, as Danish quartet VOLA come to The Sanctuary this month.

As part of their visit to London for Dingwalls, the band will be stopping in Basingstoke on August 17 before they continue to the ArcTanGent Festival in Bristol.

VOLA features Asger Mygind on vocals and guitar, Nicolai Mogensen on bass, Martin Werner on keyboards, and Felix Ewert on drums.

The band describe themselves as a mixture of genres, classifying themselves as groove-driven melodic rock with strong elements of metal and electronica.

Through the combining of genres, the band can make a unique sound.

Vocalist and guitarist Asger said: “For the most part of our material our main concern is the strength of melodies, and the criteria of success for us is the fact that the song will work just as good in a stripped down setting as it will with many layers on top. There has to be a hook that shines through no matter how we represent the music.

“In that sense, I would say that we are very inspired by artists like Porcupine Tree, Steven Wilson, Mew, The Beatles and Oceansize, who all convey a sort of musical playfulness and an unwillingness to dwell too much by a specific genre. Other great influences are Meshuggah, Deftones, Massive Attack, and Ulver.”

Having played in several different countries around the world, this is the first time that the band will be playing in Basingstoke, having previously had an ‘amazing’ experience playing to a Sheperd’s Bush audience.

The band launched their debut album, ‘Inmazes’ late last year which is a musical journey into the mind in pursuit of happiness, set to a mix of 70s progressive rock, modern day electronica and industrial, topped off with clear vocal lines.

The band are hoping that there is a unique experience in relation to the way the audience experience the show. Asger said: “I hope that our mix of very dense, heavy moments and mellow, quieter elements will create a dynamic in the show that constantly has the audience anticipating the next musical mood they will be put in. But that way of working with contrasts is not a thing that we have created. I just hope that we do it our own way.”
