EVEN after turning 75 on February 25, a former nurse from Basingstoke is still dispensing care to the area’s elderly.

Mike Davis, originally from Sussex, was a qualified nurse at Basingstoke hospital for 35 years before retiring six years ago. After passing his medical exams in 1973, he initially worked in Accident and Emergency, which he enjoyed, along with caring for the patients who were there.

Then, after retiring from working at the hospital, he became a home care assistant at All Care in Basingstoke, driving around the area to elderly people who need extra support and helping them out in their home every day.

Mr Davis said: “It’s in my blood to help people, I just really like doing it. I go out to people all over the area and help them where I can. I see two people regularly, I used to look after more, but I’ve cut down on the amount of people I’ve been seeing.

“I get a lot of job satisfaction out of what I do. I just know that this was what I was meant to do, I really enjoy it. I don’t intend to stop any time soon, I’m going to keep going for as long as I can.”

Mr Davis lives in a bungalow in Basingstoke with Lulu, his Yorkshire terrier cross.

He continued: “I’d like to thank the staff at All Care, who are all great, I get on really well with all of them and they do a great job, they’ve become my friends over my time there. I’d also like to mention my two sons, Neil and Simon for all their help and support over the years as well as my good friend Russ Hancock.”

Susan O’Brien, recruitment manager at All Care, said: “Mike’s really caring and fantastic at what he does. He’s a real inspiration to us all, he helps people feel safe in their own homes and helps those who need it.”
