SCIENTISTS from the Atomic Weapons Establishment (AWE) have inspired pupils at a local school to celebrate British Science week.

AWE, which has a base in Aldermaston, sent plasma physicist Dr Matthew Hill to the school, where he wowed pupils from North Waltham Primary School’s science club about his work with lasers at the firm.

Dr Hill has been at AWE for eight years, designing high powered laser experiments and the specialist equipment it uses to diagnose them.

He said: “Space exploration and astrophysics have been a real passion of mine for as long as I can remember, and motivated me to do a physics degree at the University of Sussex and then a PhD at the University of Leeds.”

Dr Hill added: “I know that the work we do is to keep our country safe and it gives me a sense of purpose in addition to all the amazing science.”
