BASINGSTOKE’S MP is locked in a Westminster chamber amid a “terrorist incident” that saw a police officer stabbed in the grounds of the Houses of Parliament.

According to reports, a police officer was stabbed and the alleged attacker has been shot in grounds of the Houses of Parliament.

Around three shots were heard outside the Palace of Westminster after a man ran through the gates into the front yard of the parliamentary compound apparently waving a knife.

The Metropolitan Police said in a tweet it was treating the situation as a “terrorist incident until it knew otherwise”.

Basingstoke MP, Maria Miller spoke to The Gazette from inside the chamber at the House of Commons and said: “It’s safe in here, but we’re waiting for word from the police that it is safe to come out.”

An air ambulance landed in Parliament Square and another ambulance came entered its front gates as medics rushed to help the injured people.

Armed police cleared the area around the incident and Parliament Square was closed to traffic.

A Downing Street source confirmed that Prime Minister Theresa May was "OK".

A further report has mentioned that as many as 12 people have been injured at a separate incident on Westminster bridge, where a car drove into a number of people before driving into the railings of the Palace of Westminster.

MP for NW Hampshire Kit Malthouse tweeted: “House in lockdown following shooting incident outside palace. All NW Hants team found and safe.”
