A DOG owner is warning other pet owners to be vigilant after the “horrifying” experience suffered by her dog. Denise Allen, of Anstey Close, Cranbourne, was left “furious and angry” after her three-and-a-half-year-old pup was “mauled” by another dog earlier this month.

Bella, a Cavapoo cross of a poodle and a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, was on her lead when she was out walking with Mrs Allen’s husband Peter when a “hefty dog” grabbed her and locked its jaw around Bella’s body, causing severe damage.

Mrs Allen believes the dog was a type of Bull Terrier and is now urging other dog owners to be wary of other dogs that are off the lead.

“It was an unprovoked attack,” Mrs Allen told The Gazette.

“She’s only a tiny little dog, who was minding her own business – she doesn’t like other dogs, really – and the other dog just came out of nowhere.

“That dog just got hold of Bella and wouldn’t let go. We can’t recognise the dog or owner but Bella lost a lot of skin.”

She added: “We’ve seen the vets everyday and it really has been touch and go as to whether she would survive.”

Mrs Allen praised the “dedicated” work of vets at Basingstoke Veterinary Centre, in Brighton Hill, but has been stung with increasing bills of more than £1,200.

Each day, Bella is getting strong, but for Mrs Allen this is a warning to pet owners who take their pets out for walks.

“This is my first experiences of having my dog being attacked and it’s horrifying,” Mrs Allen said.

“The vets were furious with what has happened and I feel the owner of the dog should front up and take responsibility for this.”

Mrs Allen added: “Anyone who has a dog that can be aggressive should have their dogs muzzled and kept on leads, especially down paths with houses on.

“My poor Bella still isn’t better. I urge everyone to be vigilant.”
