A YOUNG mother has slammed her housing association after waiting months for her “disgusting mould” nightmare to be resolved.

Jamie Gibbons, of Water Ridges, Oakley, hit out at Sovereign Housing Association when she was told she would have to wait until late-January to have an inspection into her “infested” home, despite alerting it to the problem in early December.

The mother-of-one took up the lease of the flat from a friend but admitted she was unaware of how bad the problems in the property were.

Miss Gibbons, 22, said she the property was “ridiculous” as mould grows in all rooms in the house – including her daughter’s – and as there are gaps in the door, it’s impossible to correctly heat her house to eradicate the problem.

She said: “My daughter has to sleep in my room now, because it’s too much in her room.

“I’m getting sick, so is my daughter, and this house is horrible. It’s like Sovereign can’t be bothered to sort out my problem. They give advice about heating the house, but there are gaps in my door that they refuse to fix, bringing in more cold and making the problem worse. I can’t afford to keep heating my house like they say.

“It’s infected, disgusting, and a joke. I just want what’s best for my daughter.”

The mould has even damaged paperwork connected with her flat.

Sovereign has issued guidelines on how to deal with problems such as mould which includes “reducing the moisture in the home by opening a window, using extractor fans and cleaning off any small areas of mould before it spreads” – however Miss Gibbons feels this will only lead to further house problems due to the time of the year.

A spokesperson for Sovereign said: “We take all reports of mould seriously. When the matter was reported in December, we made an appointment but the resident wasn’t available when we attended. We’ve now met with the resident to inspect the property and have agreed some remedial work we believe will help.”

They added: “Meanwhile we’ve invested over £100,000 in our homes in Basingstoke over the last few months to continue to improve the quality of our homes.

“However if residents have tried our advice but mould is still a problem, please get in touch with us on 0800 5872325.”
