A WINKLEBURY day care centre has been labelled “ineffective” and “weak” by inspectors. Little Monkeys Daycare, based in Watson Way, received an ‘inadequate’ rating when Ofsted visited the premises in December.

In a damning report from Ofsted inspector Jane Franks, the day care centre was graded ‘inadequate’ in the four categories it is marked in – including quality of teaching, learning and assessment and outcomes for children.

During the visit, the inspector had a tour of the nursery, observed the quality of staff interactions with children and spoke with parents about the quality of the day care.

The report, published earlier this month, said: “Procedures for induction are weak. Staff do not have a consistent understanding of the nursery’s policies and procedures, or their roles and responsibilities.

“They do not follow procedures for recording children’s accidents and injuries to support their welfare.

“The manager does not monitor staff practice effectively or provide staff with adequate coaching, support, or training to improve their teaching practice.”

The report states 12 pupils attend the day care centre, which is opened between 7am and 7pm, and is designed for children up to the age of five.

According to Little Monkeys Daycare’s website, the nursery is “the first step to a bright future” for its children.

It was the day care centre’s first inspection from Ofsted.

It continued: “Children’s health and safety is compromised. Staff do not follow the nursery procedures consistently to ensure that all children’s accidents and injuries are recorded as required.

“This has a significant impact on children’s well-being. Some staff lack understanding of how to manage children’s behaviour effectively.

“For example, at times, staff do not provide children with clear explanations appropriate to their age, and do not support young children to learn to manage their feeling and emotions.”

However, the report did find that “children enjoy healthy, nutritious meals and snacks and play outside every day”.

Little Monkeys Daycare centre refused to comment on the report.
