A LOCAL youth homelessness charity has thanked the public for supporting its #OpenDoors Christmas Appeal, becoming Gift Angels and making a difference to the lives of young people at Christmas.

North Hampshire organisation Step by Step appealed to members of the local community to help them make Christmas a little more special for young people for whom Christmas may have otherwise been a sad and difficult time.

As well as being able to offer people a warm, safe bed for the night, Step by Step were able to provide parcels of food, festive treats, toiletries, brand new bed linen and a wonderful gift bag full of gifts for each young person who stayed with them over the Christmas period.

One such person was Annie, who said: “We were lucky to even get one present. I got a whole bag full of gifts that were just perfect for me. It was as if they’d been chosen especially for me.

“There isn’t a rule book that says people have to go and buy extra presents for people like us, and yet they do. It’s so generous and I am so grateful.”

Many youngsters also spent Christmas Day at the shelter.

Step by Step is a charity that works alongside young people who are facing homelessness.

In addition to accommodation, it provides personal development opportunities and specialist support services which can empower young people to uncover their aspirations and take steps towards reaching their potential.

Jessica Oliver, head of fundraising at Step by Step, said: “In total, we received £1,535 in gift vouchers for young people, £3,000 in general donations and a staggering £6,500 in direct response to our Open Doors Appeal.

“All of this was on top of car loads of wrapped gifts, toiletries and food donations.”
