SAFETY issues surrounding lorries blocking a Basingstoke petrol station during rush hour have still not been addressed, according to residents.

As previously reported in The Gazette, a convoy of Currys Knowhow lorries fill up at the Texaco garage, in Grove Road every morning between 7.30am and 8.30am resulting in them blocking the road up to the roundabout as they wait to access the forecourt.

Despite several residents raising safety concerns, drivers have said the problem has got worse with one man, who did not wish to give his name, claiming it would only be a matter of time before someone gets seriously hurt.

He said: “I went to the garage the other day and there was a young girl walking across the entrance, it only takes one person’s impatience to push forward and that young girl could have been seriously injured.”

He added: “Currys have not taken the issues previously raised on board and we are still seeing these lorries blocking the forecourt every morning.”

The 43-year-old motorist told The Gazette that he even approached one of the drivers who he claimed said that when they pick the lorries up from the depot the tanks are always empty from the night before.

He added: “Nowadays people don’t just get their fuel and leave, they go into the shop and do some shopping, so the longer these lorries block the forecourt the more of a safety issue it becomes.”

A spokeswoman from Currys said that they were unaware that this issue had reoccurred, but were taking the appropriate action to deal with the issue.

She said: “We would like to advise local residents that we’re taking appropriate action to address the issue and are putting measures in place to ensure drivers are refuelling at other times of the day.

“We will continue to monitor the situation to limit any further inconvenience to Basingstoke residents.”
