A BUS stop has been fixed by Basingstok e and Deane Borough Council (BDBC) after a councillor branded it “dangerous” for members of the public to use.

As reported by The Gazette earlier this month, the Stagecoach bus stop in Longcross Lane was due to be investigated after Hatch Warren and Beggarwood ward councillor Dan Putty spoke of his concern about its layout.

Cllr Putty believed the bus stop was a hazard for elderly and disabled residents who use the stop in the winter months as it is built on a slope.

He also felt that residents were unable to use the seating facilities at the bus stop as the bushes impeded any view of oncoming buses.

BDBC has now stepped in to resolve the issue by levelling the surface around it.

The work took place across three days between November 14-16.

BDBC’ s head of planning and infrastructure Matthew Evans said: “We were made aware of issues and we have quickly made improvements.

“The hedges next to the bus stop have been cut back and the surface of the bus stop has been levelled, making the stop easier and safer to use for all residents.”

Stagecoach buses 8, 86 and 86X pick up residents from the shelter and to take them to destinations such as Basingstoke Bus Station and Winchester.

It was the second time in recent months the council has been criticised for bus stops in Hatch Warren.

In October, The Gazette told of a council “blunder” that saw road markings for a bus stop painted on the wrong side of the road.

Cllr Putty thanked The Gazette for its help in highlighting the issue with the council.

He added: “Now the bus stop is safer and residents will be able to use it, knowing they are less likely to have an accident.

“With the winter months coming it was important that the bus stop was changed.”
