AFTER serving as a school governor for 27 years, Tadley Town Council honoured Penny Waterfield with a Good Citizen’s Award.

Mrs Waterfield, who is also the council clerk for Baughurst Parish Council, was honoured for her dedication to the community and her service to Burnham Copse Primary School.

For 20 of the years that Mrs Waterfield was a governor at the Newchurch Road school she served as chair of governors.

The Sheridan Crescent resident was presented with the award at a town council meeting on Monday, November 7.

She said: “‘I was both surprised and delighted to receive the Good Citizen’s Award from Tadley Town Council, in recognition of my 27 years as a governor at Burnham Copse Primary School, 20 of which as chair of governors.

“I thoroughly enjoyed my time as a governor, resigning with regret, and would like to thank Tadley Town Council for honouring me in this way. It is a lasting memorial, and a thank you, to what amounts to a lifetime spent in service to the school and the community.”

Headteacher of Burnham Copse Primary, Ali Armstrong added: “We are really delighted for Penny to be presented with this award.

“She was a great asset to the school and was really involved with all of the building and expansion of the school.”

The awards were established in 1997 and are handed out following nominations from either Tadley town councillors or members of the public for people’s dedication to the community.

Leader of the town council, Cllr David Leeks said that being able to present these awards is a great way for the town to say thank you.

He said: “Penny has been a great credit to the school and has seen it progress and develop from a junior school into a primary school.”

He added: “As a council we give these awards to recognise the hard work people do for our community.

“In many cases they do work for more than one organisation so it is important for us to give some form of thanks and notice to what they do.”
