THE sun was shining on War Memorial Park as the second day of Basingstoke Live got under way.

Again thousands of people piled in to enjoy the closing day of the free music extravaganza as it celebrated its 10th year.

Organised by Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council and programmed by the Basingstoke Live Forum, the event has grown in popularity and is the perfect showcase of the musical talents the borough has to offer.

One of these local talents, Blank Page, got things swinging on the Sunrise stage on Sunday.

Over at the Amped stage, Basingstoke’s very own chaotic hardcore band, Artemis, really got things rocking, even getting audience members to create a human pyramid during their set.

Jon Lovegrove, organiser of the Amped stage told The Gazette that the idea of Basingstoke Live is that anyone is welcome. “We aren’t looking for any specific bands as there are lots of good talented musicians in Basingstoke,” Jon said.

“For us everyone is welcome and that is the atmosphere that we try to create, no matter what your musical preference, just come check out some good bands.”

Over on the main stage Reading rockers, Freeway Mad, got heads banging with air guitars at the ready, before the Original Rudeboy and former Specials frontman Neville Staple and his band closed the main stage.

Playing some of the classics from his 35-year back catalogue, Neville had War Memorial Park bouncing.

After another successful Basingstoke Festival, which culminated in Basingstoke Live, deputy leader of the borough council, Councillor Terri Reid praised its success.

Cllr Reid said: “We faced tough competition from at least two major sporting finals this weekend but once again people showed their support for Basingstoke Live to enjoy a brilliant blend of music, dance and creativity.

“Over the five stages there was something on offer for all musical tastes and I’m thrilled so many people came along to support all the talented acts, many of whom have grown up or are based in the borough. I would like to thank everyone who contributed to making this event a success.”
