AS BOTH sides of the EU referendum debate cram in some last minute campaigning ahead of tomorrow’s crucial vote, members of the remain group gathered in Basingstoke this afternoon to make their views known.

Peter Kyle, Labour MP for Hove and Portslade, baroness Maggie Jones, Labour Lords environment frontbencher, and Anneliese Dodds, South East MEP rolled into the town as part of their tour of the South East, urging people to vote remain.

The trio were joined by Basingstoke and Deane borough councillors and residents outside Oakridge Hall for All, in Forsythia Walk for last minute campaigning.

Leader of the Basingstoke Labour Party, Councillor Paul Harvey told The Gazette it was great to see so many young residents out supporting the remain campaign.

Cllr Harvey said: “It is about their future and how this country will be shaped for the next 10 or 20 years.

“Basingstoke is a big part of Europe through our jobs and through education and the opportunities it has afforded the young people of this borough, so let’s make the most of being in the European Union and vote to make a difference.”

Mr Kyle, who has been travelling around the South East of England, speaking to residents and businesses about how ‘Brexit’ would affect them, said: “Basingstoke is a place that is home to many multi-national businesses as well as small businesses, which are at the heart of this town’s economy.

“We have found that people in the South have a very balanced view, but there is a small majority who believe a vote to leave would be a leap of faith, and it is a leap many are unprepared to take.”

Ms Dodds added: “It is a much safer vote to remain, but I think we should be excited about going forward with the EU and the projects the UK could be a part of.”
