TEAMS of six people whizzed around the grounds of Basingstoke hospital in fancy dress raising money for charity.

The inaugural Bed Push time trail, organised by the North Hampshire Medical Fund, saw 11 teams racing around the designated course on Saturday, trying to clock up the fastest time.

Cops and robbers, pirates, knights and midwives were among the teams who dressed up their hospital beds to raise more than £6,000 for the charity.

The aim of the game was for five people to push a hospital bed around the course while a sixth competitor acted as the patient.

Judith Charmer, fund manager for the North Hampshire Medical Fund, said it was a great success and every single team really got into the spirit of the day.

She added: “It was incredible to have such amazing support from the community and everyone running around had a smile on their face.

“We even had a group of midwives deliver a fake baby on the course, it was just a really fun day.

“I don’t think some people expected how tough it was going to be as you couldn’t exactly practise for it, but every team put in a very respectable time.”

The team which clocked the fastest time was the A-Team made up of physios, who managed a time of five minutes eight seconds, winning themselves a meal for six at the Apollo hotel in Aldermaston Road.

Winners of best dressed went to the Basingstoke maternity ward, who dressed up as characters from hit TV show Call the Midwife, each winning a bottle of champagne.

The money raised will go towards medical equipment for Basingstoke hospital to aid with treatments and patients’ recovery.

Judith said due to the success of the Bed Push, the charity is looking to make it an annual event, looking for bigger and more elaborate costumes next year.
