A CADET from Basingstoke has been praised for her quick thinking after she gave first aid to a stricken cyclist.

Jodie Webb was being driven by her father to parades with 3rd Platoon Basingstoke, Z Company, when she saw an accident between a cyclist and a pedestrian in Winchester Road.

Before her father Steve had time to stop, the teenager jumped out of the van and was administering first aid to the unconscious cyclist.

With help from another member of the public, 13-year-old Jodie checked the man’s vital signs before putting him into the recovery position.

Her actions helped the cyclist make a full recovery.

Her mother, Karen, said: "She was pleased to have been able to help."

Jodie received a citation from Police Constable Nathan Tait, who said: “When I found out Jodie was so young I was shocked as her actions had been so crucial. She acted with bravery, confidence and in a manner well beyond her years.

“Jodie should be very proud of herself and her actions and I am personally very thankful to her for all her help at the scene on the day.”

While at a Z Company weekend away at Westdown Camp, Jodie received a Commandant’s Commendation from Colonel Andy Dawes.

Staff Sergeant Kitty Yarwood from her detachment said: “We are so thrilled that Cadet Webb has received this award.

“It’s great to see that she has been recognised for her fast thinking and selfless act to help others.

“We are very proud to have her at 3 Platoon. She is an absolute asset to the detachment.”

Saying she was proud of her daughter Karen added: “It brings a tear to a parent’s eye.”
